New Gear for the Near Year 2016 (Part Two)

Welcome back! Earlier this month we revealed Part One of this series. If you missed it, go back and read it now.

Moving on, we’re stoked to add Air Star Crystals to our collection! It’s a balloon-type fixture which raises up in the air, allowing it’s light to illuminate an area. Essentially, it mimics a small sun. At a height of 17 feet, it can cover 150 feet of area with light. This type of lighting is often used at construction areas since it provides a very comfortable, soft light (i.e. it won’t blind anyone). This new lighting fixture is exclusive to Bay Stage Live, at least in the Tampa Bay area.  Suggested uses include but are not limited to: area/safety lighting, event décor, logo branding, and fashion shows.

Late last year we acquired some Sumner Eventer Lifts.  These are a great way to save costs on rigging.  They have a weight capacity of 600 lbs, and can lift up to 25’.

In addition, there comes a time when old gear must be replaced with new. Thus, we’ve bought new Stage Decks, they come in 4’ x 8’ sections with quad ripple non-skid coating and can be 12”, 24”, or 36” high.

g3000We’ve also purchased the newer version of our G300 fog machine, which is actually called the G3000 Fog Effects Generator. This is the fogger we use to create low lying fog effects coupled with our LSG.  It’s fitted with RDM technology, DMX compatibility, 2000w Dual Core Rapid Change Block, continuous thermal control and a completely functional back-lit digital remote. It only takes 12 minutes to warm up, making it easy to use on the fly! It’s sturdy stainless steel structure supports one-gallon of fog fluid. This fog machine works well in many different applications and environments, and we’re certainly happy to have it in our repertoire.

New Gear for the New Year 2016 (Part One)

At the beginning of each year, our Bay Stage Live team discusses which new gear we should add to our ever-growing inventory. We think about items our customers will use, and what we believe will add value to the events we’re asked to create. We look at current trends, while considering future ones as well. Based on all of this information, we come up with “The List”. Once it’s finalized, we go shopping!

As we get into the specifics of our new gear, you’ll notice we’re moving towards products which offer better energy efficiency and convenience. For example, we purchased three professional high quality lighting fixtures; the Elation WW Profile LED Ellipsoidal, the Elation Colour 5 Profile LED Ellipsoidal and the Elation SixPar 300. These are fixtures that make life a little easier for everybody, and ones you’ll have a tough time finding elsewhere.

Of the three fixtures, two are ellipsoidal lights. Their purpose is to accumulate light, then direct it through a barrel with a lens. Both of our newly purchased ellipsoidal models share a few features in common, such as a CRI over 94 which provides a more realistic reproduction of an object’s color. These luminaires also support B-size metal gobos. Both fixtures work with a variety of lens options (10, 19°, 26°, 36° and 50°) to give you maximum effectiveness and flexibility for your lighting needs. However, the lens size must be specified and they are rented separately. Finally, both luminaires offer more accurate lighting due to the manual focus and 4-blade framing system.

Below, we’ll get into the differences of each lighting fixture.

Elation WW Profile LED Ellipsoidal

This is a very efficient, warm white ellipsoidal spotlight fixture which meets the professional quality of light required for theatre and broadcast. It works well for accentuating decor on-stage, highlighting performers or illuminating presenters. It’s maximum energy consumption is 160W, making it much more efficient than customary warm white lights.

Elation Colour 5 Profile LED Ellipsoidal

This is an all-new, multi-color LED spotlight fixture, featuring a 180W RGBAM (Red, Green, Blue, Amber, Mint) LED engine. In addition to providing a larger assortment of colors, it also produces spectacular ambers and true whites. This ellipsoidal really shines with its ability to uniformly mix many colors, creating nearly any color imaginable, whether fierce vibrant shades or soft, muted pastels.

Elation SixPar 300

With an estimated 100,000 hours of life, this is an RGBAW+UV fixture. This robust unit features 18 distinct six-in-one LEDs of 12W, an electronic strobe, five variable dimming curve modes and daisy-chaining capabilities. Its rugged build ensures we’ll have this fixture for a very long time.

Elation Opti 30 UV

The Opti 30 UV by Elation Professional is an Opti Par 30 with 12x 1W UV LEDs. This unit features sturdy high impact aluminum construction. The Opti 30 UV produces a standard beam angle of 25° and is equipped with a 3-pin DMX connection. This unit also features very low power consumption and very low heat output. Rigging for the Opti 30 UV includes double hanging brackets. These new black lights are an affordable option to highlight Halloween décor, glow art, glowing stage acts, and glow parties.

Elation Cuepix Blinder WW4

The new CUEPIX Blinder WW4™ features (4) long life 100W Warm White 3,200K COB LEDs, a 62° beam angle and 100° field angle, RDM (Remote Device Management), individual control of each COB module, manual pan focus, variable and selectable dimming curves, strobe effects, flicker free operation for TV and Film, 3pin and 5pin DMX and powerCon in/out connections. These fixtures are a great option for concerts or venue house lighting.

DANIELLE had a beautiful and healthy baby girl. Elle is now part of our Bay Stage Live team and has already been promoted to V.P. of Smiles.

KELLEY won a chunk of money in the lottery and has now become a grandfather. You can call him “G Papa G”.

CHRIS is now a proud aunt of 3 little monsters. She has also bought a new home and has been fixing it up in what little spare time she has during our busy season.

NICOLE found out she is expecting a Baby Boy. Jake Ryan will arrive in April 2016.

YVONNE AND BRIAN celebrated 40 years of marriage and are smitten with the idea of multiple grandchildren in their lives.

PATRICK has a beautiful little girl Annabelle, who turned 1 this year.

CODY found a wonderful lady and now has a new puppy along with 3 other 4-legged children.

GREG received a new hip and considers himself a “10” in “hipness”.

DAVID is finally finishing up his Bachelor degree at SPC and will be starting a new career at Amazon next year.

MICHELE made a life change regarding health and fitness and has been killing her goals and looking great.

MATT, our newest addition, completed his 3rd year producing Earthdance as director and is proud of the record attendance this year.

A Year In Review: Technology

From massive walls to brighter bulbs and more powerful software, there’s no denying that 2015 was the year of the LED.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with LEDs (light emitting diodes), our blog post “Getting Started with LED Lights, Fixtures and Colors” provides a crash course in this technology. You can also check out, “How LEDs Have Changed The Event Lighting Industry” for a more detailed look at the advantages LED bulbs bring to the event world. Many of these benefits also apply to the LEDs you use at home.

Now, let’s get into the changes in LED technology this year.

LED software for the lighting industry is going crazy right now, but in a good way. The phase-out of incandescent light bulbs has greatly assisted in pushing LED technology forward. Everything is getting beefed up by becoming more powerful and user-friendly.

At the moment, everyone is trying to make everything LED. Many people who have their own specific vision about LED software, now have the opportunity to make it happen. It’s an exciting time to be in the lighting and design business.

At the same time, a lot of retailers are pushing out old products to get rid of their stock. It’s difficult to want to buy anything in anticipation of what new technology will be coming out next year. Right now, we’re in a similar situation to what happened 20 years ago. We’ve just about hit the threshold of what’s possible (with the LED), and are now waiting to see who will be first to break through to the other side.

Although LED software is quickly becoming easier to use, it’s still geared towards professionals, not the average person. Those who work in the lighting profession are hearing what people want to use, and they’re tweaking the technology accordingly. This is a big reason why everything is converging into one.

Once LED technology has been maximized, our prediction is that we’ll go back to standard-looking sets. We also anticipate further development of holograms. However, that’s at least five years away from happening. Virtual concerts are yet another future trend. These events could be fully virtual or just incorporate virtual in a small way. Right now, it’s just an interesting concept, but something will happen down the road.

Brian Justo: I am thankful for a healthy life and for all the wonderful things it allows me to appreciate. Things like my ability to enjoy my wife, daughters ‘n husbands, grandchildren, brother and 89 year old mother; still in good health, as well as my fantastic family in Spain. With all of these gifts I get to spend time with my Bay Stage Live family, who I thoroughly enjoy and respect. I also appreciate the great opportunity I have to eat and drink my way through the U.S. and Europe.

Yvonne Justo: In business, I am thankful for all of our BSL employees. They are dedicated, loyal, and treat our company as though it were their own.

Personally I am thankful for having a healthy family; immediate and extended.  I am also thankful for the miracle of birth for giving me my granddaughter Elle and my future grandson Jake.

Nicole Justo Idziak: I am thankful for my husband Scott, my sweet Luke, my family, all of the wonderful people in my life that I learn from every day and most of all I am thankful for the little miracle that is growing inside of me.

Danielle Justo Sherwin: I am so very thankful for my husband Mike, our doggie Max and our new little miracle baby, Elle. Chris Hardt: Modern medicine/drugs, my Manx, my house, my sister’s pregnancy going well, my disgustingly cute niece and nephew, and clients like Anna Lucia. I am also thankful that Danielle finally got knocked up and had such a ridiculously cute and sweet baby. Everyone playing with her makes me very happy… especially Yvonne talking about her fat legs… I would be more thankful if there were puppies around here more!

Patrick Robert: I am thankful for my family, my friends, and for the return of the production season… It’s been a long hot summer!

Kelley Gifford: I am thankful for stepper motors. Stepper motors made the birth of intelligent lighting possible. I am thankful for the DMX protocol. DMX made it possible for us to tell our intelligent lights what to do. I am thankful for Q-tips. I enjoy a good eargasm.

Cody Barden: I am thankful for running water, power, and a roof over my head.  I am thankful that I have an amazing job I can go to everyday.  I am thankful for my awesome family and friends always being there for me.

David Robert: I am thankful for all of my friends, family, and the people around me that make life worth living.  I am astonished by the quality of people that I am lucky enough to have around me.

Matt White: I’m thankful for finding my passion and career early in life and sticking to it. I’m thankful for a supportive and amazing group of friends and family who love and support my ambitions. I’m thankful for art in all its forms, and its ability to affect us on a level words and emotions can’t explain. 7 Simple Lighting Techniques

The start of the holiday season always has us excited about the many events to come! For those in charge of putting together a festive affair this year, the list below will help you make it a remarkable one.

#1: Transform the room with Leko lights (ellipsoidals).

Often standard in theatre lighting, a Leko or ellipsoidal is a type of spotlight. Currently, it’s the only affordable fixture with the ability to project a gobo. The intelligent light is another option, albeit a more expensive one. In our opinion, Lekos are the way to go!

#2: Create low-lying fog at the entrance.

This feature is sure to be a huge hit! Low-lying fog can create a short-term or long-term effect. To determine which technique will work best for your event, we encourage you to read our blog post “Atmospheric Effects 101: Fog versus Haze” or just contact us.

#3: Make it snow…

You won’t find quality snow machines for sale at your local retailer; however, our warehouse offers high quality choices that you can rent. Our snow machines work with biodegradable fluid that won’t stain your clothes. The fluid also dries quickly and won’t be a slip hazard. Not all fluids can make these same claims.

#4: Stick with three decor colors.

There’s no denying that red and green have been engrained into our minds as THE colors of Christmas. But did you know that mixing these two pigments results in a not-too-pretty brown color? So, if you do decide to use red and green lighting, make sure your lighting does not overlap!

Since red and green are complementary colors, be careful when choosing each shade. If the level of brightness is too similar, both colors will compete for your attention. This can be very unsettling. One solution is to break up the red and green by incorporating a third hue such as amber or blue.

While you may be able to successfully mix more than three colors, keep in mind that the brain tends to get overwhelmed when it sees too many colors at once. One way to work around this issue is by choosing one color and using various shades of it, as well as several textures, throughout your décor. 

#5: Cover existing lights with colored gels.

Gels are an extremely easy way to incorporate color into your event. Use them to create a softly subtle mood or one that’s incredibly impactful. As you’re considering which colors to include, take a peek at the type of light source you’ll be covering. It could impact the final shade.

#6: Turn the air conditioning down to 65 degrees.

This is an easy, often overlooked technique for setting the mood. Furthermore, a colder room will keep people more alert and comfortable.

#7: Merry Christmas gobo.

In our opinion, this technique will set the mood better than anything else. For maximum impact, place your gobo right smack in the middle of the action.

Meet Cody Barden

Since we consider our clients to be extended members of the Bay Stage Live family, we feel it’s important that you get to know us on a personal level. Periodically, we’ll be interviewing our team members and providing you with the great details!

In this first post, we talk one on one with Cody Barden, who has been with us for 4 years and currently holds the title of Account Executive in our Rental Division.

Bay Stage Live: What’s been your favorite Bay Stage Live gig? And why?

Cody: I have a couple… one of my favorites every year is the “Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla” Parades. We do all of the audio on their floats for both the day and knight parades. We set up speakers and music so the floats all sound amazing. We always have a really fun time with the pirates.

Switching gears, another of my favorites was Brooke Palmer’s wedding. She’s a big event planner here in Tampa. She had a very elegant wedding at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota with 30+ vendors. There was a lot going on, but it was a gorgeous wedding. Bay Stage Live did all of the lighting and I personally ran the lighting console.

Bay Stage Live: What’s a cool tip or tool you’d like to share with everyone?

Cody: When you’re dealing with power from a generator, you always want to meter it before you plug in any gear. Power is one of those things you definitely want to respect at all times.  Another tip – if you own your own gear, it’s important to keep the optics clean, all lights look and perform better when you show them love.

Bay Stage Live: What’s your guilty pleasure?

Cody: I really, really like Reese’s. Ice cream, cups, pieces… it’s a weakness.

Bay Stage Live: What do you like best about working at Bay Stage Live?

Cody: It would have to be the family environment. Everybody here is one big crazy family, whether a Justo or not. It’s not crazy uptight like a corporate AV Company would be. We’re allowed to kick back and have fun whenever we can find some extra time.

Bay Stage Live: What first inspired/drew you to this line of work?

Cody: My grandfather ran sound for the church I grew up in and I started shadowing him in 6th grade. He taught me a lot about the world of audio and from there I transitioned into doing lighting. Working in Bay Stage Live’s rental division, people call me for all sorts of show needs, including sound, staging and lighting.

Bay Stage Live: Tell us a bit about your family.

Cody: I was born and raised here in Tampa where my family still resides. I have one older brother who is married with a daughter on the way. My parents have always been supportive of me wanting to work in this industry, even through the late nights and 80-90 hour work weeks. They’re happy for me that I’m doing something I love.

How to Create the Perfect Mood at your Event

Creating the right mood for any event is essential to its success. Since lighting is such a large part of setting the mood – it’s fair to say that mood and lighting go hand and hand.

So how do you create the perfect mood? By focusing on these four aspects…

1) COLOR – It’s long been understood that certain colors evoke specific emotions. Some colors make people feel relaxed, others keep them alert. Taking that one step further, the best lighting professionals also know how to use color transitions to make the most of an event.
We’ll use a speaking event as an example. As the speaker moves from one topic to another, Bay Stage Live will transition from one color to another – to mimic the change in subject. It is a slow change, yet it helps the audience to remain engaged in the speech.

3 Hidden Venue Charges Everyone Ought to Know About


Although most venues often don’t include professional lighting services with your space rental, they still have a VERY BIG say in how much it will cost you. Why? Because each venue sets its own fees for rigging, electrical and any additional labor services.

Read on to learn what these entail, and how to avoid being overcharged.

First, we have rigging. This is the structure which supports the light and sound equipment, both above and around your event space. Rigging can make the difference between an okay event and an incredible one! As it could be quite dangerous if anything falls, rigging should only be handled by a professional.

Second, there’s electrical. The type, amount and location of electrical power is what’s important here. Sufficient power is not always easily accessible, especially in older buildings. Even newer buildings may not have enough electrical service for the type of event you want. It may require additional costs, and it’s important you know this upfront.

Finally, there’s labor. As with rigging and electrical, labor is a varied expense. Some venues have in-house labor rules forcing you to pay for additional employees to shadow the professionals you’ve already hired to create, setup and run your event.
